Aspiration: the puff of air that tells "pin" from "bin" — and why "spin" sounds like "sbin"
English listeners do not tell pin from bin by whether your vocal folds are vibrating. They tell them apart by a puff of air.
Hold a strip of paper an inch in front of your lips and say pin. The paper should jump. Now say bin with the same energy: the paper barely moves. That puff is called aspiration, and it is written with a small raised h in narrow transcription — pin is /pʰɪn/, bin is /bɪn/. Most textbooks describe /p, t, k/ as "voiceless" and /b, d, ɡ/ as "voiced," and while that is true in a laboratory sense, it is not the cue English ears actually use at the start of a word. In that position both sets are effectively voiceless. What separates them is the delay between releasing the closure and starting the vowel — long delay with a burst of breath for /p, t, k/, immediate onset for /b, d, ɡ/. Get the aspiration wrong and your pin will be heard as bin, no matter how carefully you think about voicing.
Aspirated at the start of a stressed syllable
This is where the puff belongs, and it is strong.

Two details are easy to miss. First, the trigger is a stressed syllable, not the start of the word — the /t/ in attend is aspirated because the second syllable carries the stress, while the /t/ in butter is not, because the second syllable does not. Second, when /p, t, k/ are followed by /l/, /r/, /w/ or /j/, the aspiration does not disappear; it moves onto the following sound, which is produced voicelessly. That is why the r in train and the l in play sound breathy and almost hissed compared with the r in drain or the l in blue.
If your first language does not use aspiration contrastively — many Romance, Slavic and East Asian languages do not — your /p, t, k/ are probably unaspirated by default. To English ears that puts them in the /b, d, ɡ/ column. The fix is mechanical rather than conceptual: build up a little more pressure behind the closure and release it sharply, letting the breath escape before the vowel starts.
Unaspirated after /s/, which is why "spin" can sound like "sbin"
English has a strict exception. After /s/ at the start of a syllable, /p, t, k/ lose their aspiration entirely.

- speak, still, screen, spot, sky
This is not a stylistic option; it is obligatory, and native speakers cannot easily produce the aspirated version. The consequence is that the /p/ in spin is phonetically closer to the /b/ in bin than to the /p/ in pin. Speakers of languages that rely on voicing rather than aspiration frequently hear spin as "sbin," stop as "sdop," and skin as "sgin," and transcribe them that way when learning by ear. Nothing has gone wrong — that really is what the sound is. English simply files it under /p/ because no word contrasts spin with a hypothetical sbin, so the distinction has no work to do in that position.
Use this as a shortcut. If you struggle to produce an unaspirated /p/ deliberately, say spin and then remove the /s/ while keeping the rest identical. What is left is a clean unaspirated /p/ — the same sound many languages use as their default /p/, and a useful reference point for feeling the difference.
Unreleased or glottalised at the end of a word
At the end of a word, /p, t, k/ often are not released at all. The closure is made and simply held, so there is a shape but no burst.

Native speakers commonly reinforce these with a simultaneous closure in the throat, which cuts the preceding vowel short and gives English final syllables their clipped, definite ending. What listeners then use to identify the consonant is not the release, which never comes, but the way the vowel bends just before the closure. This is why adding a small vowel after a final stop — saying something like /stɒpə/ — is more disruptive than it feels: it supplies a release English was not expecting and lengthens a syllable that should have ended abruptly.
The paper test is the fastest way to check all of this on yourself. Say pin, spin, bin in that order with the strip in front of your mouth. The paper should jump on the first, stay still on the second, and stay still on the third. If it jumps on spin, you are over-aspirating; if it stays still on pin, that word is arriving at listeners as bin.
