The Only Difference Between "Fan" and "Van" Is a Buzz You Can't See

A lot of learners spend real effort getting /v/ away from /w/ — sorting out the lip-round-versus-teeth-on-lip thing — and then walk straight into the next trap sitting right next to it: /f/ and /v/. These two sounds use the exact same mouth shape. Top teeth resting lightly on the bottom lip, air pushed through the gap. The only difference is whether the vocal cords are buzzing. And that's exactly the part that's easy to miss, because you can't see it in a mirror — you can only feel it or hear it.

Why this pair slips through so often

Plenty of languages have a clean, effortless /f/ but no everyday equivalent of /v/ — so learners arrive with a reliable /f/ and no natural home for its voiced twin. Faced with a word spelled with v, the mouth either defaults to /w/ (the very-becomes-wery pattern) or just reuses the voiceless sound it already has — van comes out as fan, safe and save blur together, and on the listening side, telling the two apart from context alone gets harder than it should.

What actually separates the two sounds

/f/ and /v/ are a voicing pair: same place of articulation (teeth on lip), same manner (fricative), same airflow. The one thing that changes is the vocal cords. For /f/, they stay still — all you get is the hiss of air. For /v/, they vibrate the whole time, and that vibration rides on top of the same hiss as a low buzz.

Which means staring at your mouth in a mirror will never tell these two apart — they look identical. The real difference lives in your throat. You can feel it. You can't see it.

The fastest self-check: fingers on the throat

Rest two fingers lightly against your throat, right where you'd feel a hum. Say a long /fffff/ — the throat should stay quiet, no buzz at all. Keep the mouth shape exactly the same, "switch on" the vocal cords, and say /vvvvv/ — this time you should feel a steady vibration, like a small motor running.

Try it on a word: fan. Fingers on the throat for that first sound — should feel nothing. Van — same position, same first sound — should feel a buzz. If both words feel identical, whether buzzing or not, that's a sign your mouth currently only produces one of the two, and the other has quietly merged into it.

Minimal pairs to isolate the difference

Notice the last two: leaf/leave has the sound at the end of the word, fan/van has it at the start. The rule doesn't change with position — it's the vocal cords, not the vowel around it, that decides which sound you're making.

Why this pair is worth isolating

Mix up fan and van, and context usually rescues you. Mix up safe and save, and you've swapped an adjective for a verb — "it's safe" and "I save" mean genuinely different things, and guessing wrong costs more than it looks like it should. There's also a teaching gap here: most pronunciation guides cover the mouth shape and stop, without ever mentioning the throat check — so plenty of people drill the /v/ shape for months and never notice they're still producing a voiceless /f/.

How to drill it: quiet version first, then add the buzz

Lock the mouth shape in place — teeth on lip, no movement — and produce only the airflow, no voicing: /fffff/, fingers on the throat confirming it's quiet. Without changing the mouth shape at all, switch the vocal cords on and turn it into /vvvvv/. Nothing about the mouth should change; the only thing flipping is the buzz in your throat. Go back and forth a few times — f-v-f-v — feeling that switch, then return to fan-van and safe-save with a finger still on your throat to check each one.
