Your Vowel Starts Going Nasal Before You Even Reach the N
Here's a detail almost no textbook mentions, and it quietly explains part of why pronunciation can be individually "correct" and still sound slightly stiff: whenever a vowel in English is followed by /m/, /n/, or /ŋ/, that vowel starts leaking air into the nose before it even finishes.
First, a clarification: English doesn't have nasal vowels
French has true nasal vowels — the ones in bon or français — where nasality is baked into the vowel itself, sometimes replacing the consonant that would follow. English isn't like that. English vowels are, phonemically, purely oral, and /m/, /n/, /ŋ/ still get pronounced in full afterward.
The detail lives in the transition between the two. The velum — the soft tissue at the back of the roof of your mouth — has to be raised for oral vowels and lowered to let air escape through the nose for /m/, /n/, /ŋ/. That switch doesn't happen instantly at the exact boundary between vowel and consonant. The velum starts dropping slightly early, so the last sliver of the vowel is already partly nasal before the consonant itself even begins.
Linguists call this anticipatory nasalization. Native speakers do it automatically, with zero conscious effort.
Hear the contrast
- bad /bæd/ — fully oral vowel, ends in /d/, velum stays raised the whole time
- ban /bæ̃n/ — same vowel symbol /æ/, but because it's followed by /n/, the vowel is already nasalizing as it ends
- cap /kæp/ — oral
- camp /kæ̃mp/ — the vowel nasalizes before the /m/ even arrives
- can /kæ̃n/, man /mæ̃n/, sun /sʌ̃n/, sing /sɪ̃ŋ/, from /frɒ̃m/
Quick self-test: pinch your nose and say "man" slowly. On the vowel itself, you should feel a small change in pressure — nasality has already started before you get to the n. Now do the same with "mad." Nothing changes during the vowel, because there's no nasal consonant coming.
Why this is worth practising on its own
Many learners — especially from languages that treat vowels and consonants as sharply separate blocks — tend to say a fully oral vowel, then snap abruptly into a heavy, fully-formed nasal consonant. Each sound in isolation is technically fine, but strung together it can sound clipped and mechanical, because native speech has no such hard edge here. The velum eases open gradually; the sounds blend.
Go too far the other way, though — nasalizing too early or too heavily — and /m/, /n/, /ŋ/ can end up sounding mushy or get swallowed entirely. So this isn't a question of whether to nasalize. It's a question of timing and degree: the nasal quality only belongs to the last sliver of the vowel, and the consonant afterward still needs to be pronounced fully.
How to practise it
Take pairs that differ only in whether a nasal consonant follows: bad–ban, cap–camp, hat–ham, add–and, bed–Ben. Say the non-nasal one first and notice the plain, fully-oral vowel. Then say the nasal one, letting the very end of the vowel soften and lean slightly into the nose before you fully close your lips or touch your tongue tip for the /m/ or /n/. You're not exaggerating it — just letting that brief transition happen instead of blocking it.
