Do "No" and "Now" Sound the Same to You? Two Flattened Diphthongs

Say no and now back to back a few times. If they sound almost identical to you — like the same vowel with an extra nasal tacked on the end — you've probably been collapsing two genuinely different diphthongs into one.

These aren't variations of the same sound

The vowel in no is /əʊ/ (British) or /oʊ/ (American). The vowel in now is /aʊ/. The only thing they share is that both glide toward /ʊ/ — everything before that is different.

A diphthong isn't a fixed shape, it's a glide

Plenty of languages treat vowels as a shape you hold: the mouth gets into position and stays there. English diphthongs don't work that way. They're a continuous movement from one mouth position to another, with no pause in between.

The difference is entirely in the starting point

If your first language doesn't use wide, sweeping vowel glides, the instinct when you hit an English diphthong is to flatten it into a single, static vowel — usually something vague in between, closer to a plain "oh." That erases exactly the distinction that matters: the starting point. Once it's gone, no and now start sounding like the same vowel with or without a nasal ending.

Train your ear with minimal pairs

Read down the left column first, feeling how little the jaw drops before it pulls back in. Then the right column, feeling the jaw open wide before rounding. The difference should happen at the beginning of the sound, not the end.

Other /əʊ/ words that get flattened

go, so, home, phone, coach, road, most, own, though — wildly different spellings (o, oa, oe, ough), all the same /əʊ/ vowel, and all vulnerable to the same flattening. Put a finger under your chin while you say one — you should feel the jaw move slightly as the lips round. If it doesn't move, the glide isn't happening.

How to fix it: exaggerate first, then pull back

On the first pass, stretch the glide out — slow it down, even make it a little cartoonish — so you can confirm you're actually moving through two positions, not resting on one. On the second pass, speed back up to normal, and the glide will naturally shrink. What has to survive that shrinking is the difference in where it starts. That's the whole reason no and now sound different at all.
