The "p" in "Pin" Has a Puff of Air. The "p" in "Spin" Doesn't.
Most learners drill p/t/k against b/d/g as a "voiced vs. voiceless" problem. That's real, but it's not what actually gives away an accent on words like spy, stop, or sky. What gives it away is that English changes how it says p, t, and k depending on where they sit — and almost nobody explains the rule.
Same letter, two completely different actions
Say pin, then spin. Both have a p. They are not the same p.
- pin /pɪn/ — the lips build a bit of pressure, then release with an audible puff of air before the vowel. Hold a hand in front of your mouth and you'll feel it.
- spin /spɪn/ — the lips release with almost no air. It slides straight into the vowel.
That's not your imagination. It's a rule: word-initial p, t, and k are aspirated when they open a stressed syllable — written [pʰ] in narrow transcription. But the moment an /s/ sits in front of them in the same syllable, the aspiration disappears — [p], no puff.
The same pattern with t and k
- top /tɒp/, aspirated [tʰɒp] — stop /stɒp/, unaspirated [stɒp]
- cat /kæt/, aspirated [kʰæt] — scat /skæt/, unaspirated [skæt]
- pie /paɪ/ aspirated — spy /spaɪ/ unaspirated
- kill /kɪl/ aspirated — skill /skɪl/ unaspirated
- tar /tɑː/ aspirated — star /stɑː/ unaspirated
The rule is blunt: whenever s sits directly in front of p, t, or k in the same syllable, that stop loses its aspiration.
Why this specific rule is worth learning
Aspiration isn't decorative. In several languages — Mandarin among them — the contrast that separates p from b isn't whether the vocal cords vibrate, it's whether there's a puff of air. Mandarin p is aspirated everywhere it appears, with no unaspirated version. So when Mandarin speakers hit an English word where p loses its aspiration — spy, stop, sky — there's no matching category to reach for. Two things tend to happen: speakers keep aspirating anyway, which makes the word sound heavier and adds a beat of length that isn't there in native speech; and listeners, hearing a puffless p, sometimes register it as closer to a b, because that missing puff of air is the very cue that would separate b from p.
A detail that flips the rule off
Syllable boundaries matter more than letter order. Mistake splits as mis-take — s and t belong to different syllables, so t is fully aspirated: [mɪˈsteɪk]. Stake has s and t opening the same syllable, so no aspiration: [steɪk]. Same four letters in a row, opposite outcome, purely because of where the syllable break falls.
How to check it, with paper instead of theory
Hold a strip of paper an inch from your mouth and say these pairs: pin–spin, top–stop, cat–scat, pie–spy, kill–skill, tar–star. The paper should flutter clearly on the first word of each pair and barely move on the second. You don't need to hold the terms "aspirated" or "voiceless" in your head — the paper tells you immediately whether the puff is there.
