Not Every Word Gets the Same Weight: How English Sentence Stress Works
Say a sentence giving every word equal effort, and it comes out accurate — and somehow still off. Nothing is technically wrong. What's missing is that some words were never supposed to be loud in the first place.
English words in a sentence fall into two groups: content words and function words.
Content words carry the meaning
Nouns, main verbs, adjectives, adverbs — remove any of these and the sentence loses information. These are the words that get stress: clear, a bit longer, a bit louder.
Function words carry the grammar
Pronouns, auxiliary verbs, prepositions, articles, conjunctions — swap these out and the grammatical shape barely changes. These get compressed: quieter, faster, and their vowels usually reduce to /ə/.
Take one sentence:
I want to buy a book for her.
- want, buy, book are content words, stressed: /wɒnt/, /baɪ/, /bʊk/
- I, to, a, for, her are function words, unstressed — to reduces to /tə/, a to /ə/, her often to /ə/
The same word can switch roles depending on the sentence. Can is normally unstressed, reduced to /kən/ — but in "Yes, I can," where it's the entire point of the reply, it becomes the sentence's one stressed word, pronounced /kæn/. That's not an exception; it's the same rule from the other side: stress tracks whether a word is currently carrying new information, not some fixed property of the word itself.
This isn't stylistic — it's how English keeps time
English is a stress-timed language: the interval from one stressed syllable to the next tends to stay roughly equal, no matter how many function words get squeezed in between.
- "CATS CHASE MICE." — three content words, three beats, almost nothing in between.
- "The CATS have CHASED the MICE." — three extra function words added, but still three beats, at roughly the same tempo.
Those extra function words in the second sentence get compressed into the gaps between beats — spoken faster and lighter to keep the rhythm intact. That's the "da-DUM-da-da-DUM" pulse English has, instead of every word landing with equal weight.
Why this matters for both listening and speaking
For listening: function words getting reduced — sometimes almost to nothing — is the default for native speakers, not carelessness. If you're waiting for every word to arrive fully pronounced, you're waiting for a version that was never going to happen.
For speaking: giving every word equal stress forces the listener to guess which word actually mattered. The sentence loses its built-in signal for "this is the point," and can end up harder to follow — and flatter-sounding — than one with normal stress contrast.
How to practise it
Take a sentence, circle the content words, and say only those clearly and with force. Let the function words in between blur and speed up — on purpose, more than feels natural at first. Overdoing that contrast is usually what actually lands close to native rhythm.
