Why "Tree" Sounds Like "Chree": The Hidden Affrication of TR and DR
Most learners approach words like tree or drive letter by letter: say the t, then say the r. The result is careful, evenly paced, and doesn't sound like a native speaker at all.
The issue isn't that your t or your r is wrong on its own. It's that native speech never keeps them separate in the first place.
TR and DR almost never stay as "clean" T and D
In natural, connected English, /tr/ regularly slides toward something closer to "chr," and /dr/ slides toward "jr." Tree comes out close to "chree." Truck leans toward "chruck." Dream leans toward "jream," and drive toward "jrive."
This isn't sloppiness — it's close to unavoidable given how English /r/ is made. The English /r/ pulls the tongue tip back and up, away from the roof of the mouth, without ever touching it. A /t/ or /d/ sitting right before that retraction gets dragged along: the release picks up extra friction and shifts toward /tʃ/ (the "ch" sound) or /dʒ/ (the "j" sound).

- train /treɪn/ → [tʃreɪn]
- truck /trʌk/ → [tʃrʌk]
- dream /driːm/ → [dʒriːm]
- drive /draɪv/ → [dʒraɪv]

The spelling never changes, and dictionaries still transcribe these as /tr/ and /dr/. The shift only shows up in how the words actually sound. That's also why these words trip up listening comprehension: you're listening for a crisp "t-r" you were taught to expect, and the speaker is producing something closer to "chr."
Why your TR / DR doesn't sound native
Reading t-r as two separate letters usually inserts a small stop or a fully released, crisp /t/ before the /r/ even starts. Native speech doesn't have that gap. The /t/ or /d/ glides almost directly into the retracted /r/ position, and the friction that appears at that junction is what carries the "ch"/"j" color — it isn't a separate step you add on top.
How to practice it
Don't memorize a rule to apply consciously. Reverse the order instead: set your tongue in the /r/ position first — pulled back, not touching the roof of the mouth — then let the /t/ or /d/ brush past that position on the way in, rather than firing off a complete, isolated /t/ and only then starting the /r/.
Try saying truck right next to chuck. If you're doing it naturally, truck will sound a little closer to chuck than you expected. That's the friction landing correctly.
